Ian
'Barra' Miller
Ian 'Barra' Miller is Australia's best known and most highly regarded
fishing rod designer and handcrafter.
His exclusive game rods find their way to every corner of the globe,
filling the rod holders of many world famous vessels including Hawaii's
'Northern Lights', Madeira's 'Pesca Grossa' and the 'Viking ll'
in Cairns to mention just a few.
His 'Millerods' casting rod series are the favoured tools of many
of our top anglers right across the continent.
Ian is rod design consultant with Shimano Australia, involved in the
best selling 'Steve Starling Signature' series and the new 'Millennium'
range. He is also a respected fishing journalist in both the print and
electronic media, and as a seminar presenter.
Ian travels extensively to fish and is an accomplished tournament angler,
as well as having held Australian sport and game fishing records. He is
one of the very few anglers who has caught and released all five species
of Indo-Pacific billfish.
In 1993 and '94, Ian helped pioneer an exciting new sport fishery off
southern Indonesia, catching the nation's first ever broadbill swordfishes
on rod and reel, conducting training programmes and organising and overseeing
their first billfish tournament.
Always a leader and innovator, his Shortstroker series were the first
serious and readily available representatives of the 'stroker revolution'
that changed the way most of us fish offshore with medium and heavy tackle,
and still represent the benchmark by which all are judged.
Ian's 'Barra' nickname, developed from his love of the famous barramundi,
and he regularly travels to the Top End to fish for them on lure and fly.
He also has a passion for Australian bass, the fish he credits with sparking
his interest in sportfishing over twenty years ago. Trout and golden perch
are his other favourite freshwater targets.
