Garry Brown

I started my fishing career in the late fifties, mainly fishing with my dad in the Georges and Port Hacking Rivers, as well as Botany Bay. The main species of fish I targeted was yellowfin bream, dusky flathead and sand whiting. It wasn’t long before I started to fish the Woronora, Parramatta, Lane Cove and Iron Rivers, Sydney and Middle Harbours. My targeted species of fish now started to include Australian salmon, yellowtail kingfish, tailor, bonito, luderick, leatherjackets, crabs and mulloway.

Throughout my school years I started to fish many different parts of NSW For the above fish species. Once I got my self a car I start to explore the other states and territories in Australia and fished places like the Noosa, Clarence, Shoalhaven, Murray and Tweed rivers.

Not only do I have a passion for fishing in the estuaries and bays, I also enjoy getting out on a beach chasing bream and whiting, as well as fishing off the rocks for pelagics, luderick and those arm pulling drummer. Even though saltwater fishing has played the major part of my fishing life, I have also fished for Golden perch at Windermere, rainbow and brown trout in the Snowies and Australian bass were ever I can.

Currently I am working as a full time TAFE teacher in the commercial area. While at TAFE I have developed and written a course on recreational fishing that is currently running nationally. I also write for NSWFM, Saltwater Sports Fishing and Fishing World. In my spare time I run and conduct recreational fishing classes on “ How, Where, When and Why to fish in the Sydney area at a variety of tackle shops in Sydney.

I have also written a book called Fishing Sydney’s Waterways. The boat is a location guide for the whole of the Sydney area and covers the Port Hacking, Georges, Woronora, Parramatta, Lane and Iron Cove rivers, Sydney and middle Harbours and the whole of the Hawkesbury river system. There are also 40 offshore GPS spots as well as a number of beach spots.

I am also a consultant for the boating and tackle industry, with Shakespeare Australia Mustad Hooks and Mako Sunglasses being my sponsors.
