Fisheries Victoria
'A fortnightly round-up of recreational fisheries management issues'
Fish-e-Fax Issue 187, 21 December 2006
Applications for stocking funding coming to a close
Individuals or parties who are interested in applying for a grant through the Recreational Fishing Grant Program (RFGP) to fund a fish stocking project in 2006/07 are reminded that applications will close on Friday 12 January 2007.
The stocking of fish funded from the Program will be considered as a part of the planned annual stocking program conducted by Fisheries Victoria. This involves state-wide fish stocking consultation meetings with Victoria's Recreational Fishing peak body (VRFish), Primary Industries Research Victoria (PIRVic), regional Fisheries staff, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Catchment/Water Management Authorities.
All fish stocking proposals should be discussed with the VRFish Secretariat (03 9854 6167), prior to commencing the grant application process.

Have your say – Corangamite Fishery Management Plan
Fisheries Victoria is calling on recreational fishers and the community to have their say about an inland fishery management plan being prepared for the Corangamite region.
The Fishery Management Plan will identify measures to manage recreational fishing in the lakes, impoundments, rivers and estuaries within the region administered by the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority.
The Corangamite region supports high quality estuarine and inland recreational fisheries for species including black bream, mulloway, salmonids and blackfish. Recreational fisheries and associated tourism provide significant social and economic value to the region's communities. Of note in the region are lakes such as Bullen Merri and Purrumbete, estuaries such as the Barwon and Curdies, and rivers such as the Gellibrand and Aire, which are all popular recreational fishing locations.
An important part of developing the Management Plan is to look at the values, interests and issues associated with recreational fishing across the region.
A Steering Committee, established to assist with the preparation of the Management Plan, is keen to know:
- What sites and species are the most important for recreational fishing in the Corangamite region?
- What factors do fishers believe are limiting their ability to target or catch these species?
- How can recreational fishing opportunities be enhanced in the Corangamite region?
The Steering Committee will be independently chaired by Dr Helen Arundel from Deakin University and will have representatives from the Victorian Recreational Fishing peak body (VRFish), the Fisheries Co-management Council, Indigenous interests, Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, Southern Rural Water, Barwon Water, the Department of Sustainability and Environment, and the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
The DPI is inviting recreational anglers and other interested community groups to attend a public meeting to assist in answering the above questions. The following public meetings are scheduled:
