NSW minister opts out of new Carr cabinet
Fisheries Minister Eddie Obeid has announced he will not be a minister in
the new Carr Cabinet.
Mr Obeid has released a statement confirming reports that he is standing
aside from the frontbench.
Fisheries and Mineral Resources Minister and factional kingpin Eddie
Obeid was the first of three senior ministers to announce he would make
way for new blood.
"After discussions with my family, my party and parliamentary colleagues
and the premier, I have decided that I will not offer myself for reselection
to the ministry," Mr Obeid said in a statement.
He is one of three ministers the Premier wants to remove to make way
for new blood in his ministry.
Mr Obeid says his decision not to offer himself for re-election to the
ministry was taken reluctantly but says he still sees a significant role
for himself in the Carr Government's third term.
Bob Carr spent yesterday trying to persuade Mr Obeid and Prisons Minister
Richard Amery that their time on the front bench is up, and that they
should go graciously, allowing a number of new faces to fill their spots.
