I was hoping you guys can help me out. I'm a complete novice when it comes to fly fishing and i'm looking to purchase my first fly rod. The species i will be fishing for will be bream, bass, flathead, etc out of a kayak in the estuarys and freshwater rivers. What would be the best weight rod and type of flyline to catch these species. any good rod brands(preferably in IM6 graphite)my budget is $500

You'll get a nice rod for that sort of $$$. Have a cast of some of the Sage's, and in particular try the Reddington CPS range ( you'd want a 6 weight I reckon for the species mentioned ). There's also quite a few going around on the 2nd hand market.....remember to cast before you buy though. Horses for courses.

6 weight would be a bit light for Bream and Flatties, not because it wouldn't handle the fish but the chances of encountering something bigger is very high and in snaggy country the extra weight will help get the fish away from home. I would go a 7wt minimum.
As Chewie mentioned, $500 will get you a pretty good rod. There are a myriad of ranges of course, but Sage, St Croix, Loomis, Redington, Scientific Angler are all good brands to look into. Sage and Loomis are in the high end bracket with the others offering good value rods.
