The new look Windamere
Invitational, renamed
as the Golden Classic
and with a new three-session
format, was hard fought
over its traditional timeslot
on the first weekend in
November.

Classic!... |
Fishing from the shoreline
near the dam wall with
hard-bodied lures, Paul
Winchester, John Scott
and Peter Winchester -
'Team Smoo Chasers' -
were the eventual winners
of the Steve Starling
Champion Team Trophy.
A hot bite during the
second, five-hour session
propelled the boys to
the lead and they were
never headed when the
final afternoon session
produced only moderate
numbers of fish for the
38 team field.
Paul Winchester also
took out Champion Angler
honours; with Georgina
Cullen named Champion
Lady, and Andrew Dunn
the Champion Junior. Scott
McAlister caught the largest
golden perch at 62cm,
and Dave Dumpleton the
largest on fly of 57cm.
'Dumpo', who also fished
from the bank, caught
and released a Murray
cod of 90cm on his fly
tackle that was estimated
to be around 15kg for
a personal highlight.
One other cod was successfully
encountered, this one
a massive beast that measured
99cm and was estimated
at 30kg, being caught
and released by Graham
Willis, a member of the
Legend Lures Team
.
The 'Sportsfish Australia
Golden Dash', a new mini-competition
concept that pitted teams
against the clock as well
as each other for large
cash prizes, augmented
the catch-and-release-only
event. After a Bimini
type start, there was
a mad flurry of activity
to bring back a large
golden for live measuring
by NSW Fisheries, and
bonus points were on offer
for the fastest returns.
It was a lot of fun and
plenty of fish were entered,
with the event eventually
being won by Team Platypus
(John Knolls, Greg Beattie
and Georgina Cullen) with
a 55cm golden that earned
them 76 points and $800
cash.
